It's not very often when staff from ABILITY Awareness has the opportunity to visit a future homeowner's current living conditions. In this instance, we did... and the opportunity that we had, along with Congressman Bob Etheridge, to learn about Selma's story underscored the reason we are all committed to ABILITY Awareness' mission to build a world of inclusion.
Selma Smith was a successful accountant and single mother. A devastating car accident in 1999 left Selma with quadraplegia and using a wheelchair that provides full body support. Selma appointed a friend power-of-attorney and sadly her friend disappeared along with her life savings. Selma's only recourse was to take residence in a small trailer that requires the strength of at least two people to carry her wheelchair up the steps to her front door.
For seven years, Selma has been trapped in one small room of her home. Most days Selma waits: for help out of bed, for help into the living room, for help to turn on her television. With her new ABILITY House, her wait is finally over.
In addition to providing Selma and her children with an accessible home she can independently move around in, this ABILITY Build engaged injured veterans in its construction, along with other volunteers with disabilities.
